Coppa della Perugina – Rare 1960 reprint of 1924 Poster
The Coppa della Perugina was a motor race that was held from 1924-1927. The only original poster I can find for this event is well into 5 figures i.e. £14,500.
A few were reprinted in 1960 from the original plates, and this is one of them.
It’s linen backed and quite magnificent. Even as a reprint, it’s well over 50 years old. There are some cheap (and some not so cheap) and nasty modern repros out there, and a couple being described as original when they’re obviously not, so take care !
The Coppa della Perugina was run as a race event back then and is now an historic event, as you can see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWx9FNMYtm8
And have a look at the smaller Pescara race poster in the lower image. This is original and a very early piece of Ferrari racing history.
The Circuito di Pescara, previously the Coppa Acerbo, was, at 24 – 26km, longer than the Nurburgring, and it was here, on the 15th of August 1947, that the Ferrari 159 Spyder made its debut. Check this link for early Ferrari lore and legend: http://www.modelfoxbrianza.it/1947_Ferrari.htm
Even more special, this was the first year of Ferrari competition; of SCUDERIA FERRARI, making this the first poster in Ferrari racing history.
Franco Cortese, after a 20 minute (!) pit stop to cure an oil cooling problem, then drove the wheels off the new 159, to come home second. Vincenzo Auricchio brought his Stanguellini home in first.
This small, ORIGINAL, poster is in wonderful condition. The two little holes you can see, top centre, are meant to be there, as this was designed to be hung for display. There is some very (and I mean ‘very’) light border wear, otherwise this 35 x 25cm card is excellent, with vivid colours, particularly on race car 12, almost certainly a Cisitalia.
